Adapter
Electronic adapters change a higher-voltage alternating current to a lower-voltage direct current or higher -voltage direct current to lower voltage alternative current for use with devices that need a comparatively continuous voltage (within a tolerance).
How Adapter Works:
A basic adapter contains of a transformer, a rectifier, and an electronic filter. The transformer firstly converts a comparatively high-voltage alternating current that is supplied by an electrical outlet to a lower voltage suitable for the device which needs power. Then a rectifier converts alternating current into direct current.
AC Adapter
An AC adapter is a peripheral power supply used with devices that run on batteries or have no other power source. AC adapters help reduce the size of a laptop computer by easing the need for a standard sized power supply.
In a modern day most common use of AC adapter in charging the batteries of Laptop, Mobile Phones etc.
SMPS
In modern use the most common adapter is the Switched Mode Power Supply (SMPS). These are considerably more complex than linear regulated power supplies and have clear advantages. The main advantage for SMPS is that it gives DC supplies that can deliver more power for a given size, cost and weight of the adapter.
SMPS is used in many applications such as battery chargers, laptops, vehicles, LED lighting, and other consumer electronics.
