Carbon film resistors are fixed-value resistors. They are composed of a ceramic carrier encased in a thin, pure carbon film. Carbon film resistors are made by depositing a carbon film or layer on a ceramic substrate. The carbon film acts as an electric current conductor. As a result, some electric current is blocked by the carbon film. The ceramic substrate acts as a heat and electrical insulator. Heat cannot thus pass through the ceramic substrate. As a resistive material, this carbon film is used. Carbon-film resistors have excellent long-term stability. Voltage changes have no effect on the resistance value. It also has a negative temperature coefficient, which means that as the temperature rises, the resistance decreases. Today, carbon-composition resistors are still widely used.
