With a fixed voltage reference, the trigger diode can be utilized as a starting element in fluorescent lamp ballasts or in conjunction with triacs for more straightforward gate control circuits. The DIAC is a semiconductor device consisting of two junctions and three layers. The two components of the word DIAC are DI and AC. The diode (or two) is what the acronym DI stands for. Alternating Current (AC) stands for Di, Tri, Quad, Penta, and so on. The diode for alternating current is abbreviated as DIAC. A pair of parallel diodes, one in forward bias and the other in reverse bias with regard to both sides, combine to form the DIAC. A unique type of diode called a DIAC permits current to flow in both directions when certain conditions are met.
