One or more sets of electrical contacts in a sealed glass envelope containing a small amount of mercury are present in this mercury sensor. Moreover, a vacuum, an inert gas, or hydrogen under pressure could be present in the enclosure. The mercury drop is continuously drawn by gravity to the bottom of the envelope. An electrical circuit is completed when the switch is tilted in the proper direction and the mercury makes contact with a series of contacts. By tilting the switch in the other direction, the circuit is broken and the mercury is moved away from that pair of contacts.
