LM3915N IC – LED Dot/Bar Display Driver IC
The monolithic integrated circuit LM3915 senses analog voltage levels and powers ten vacuum fluorescent, LCD, or LED displays to produce a logarithmic, 3-dB-per-step, analog display. The display switches from a bar graph to a moving dot display with the push of a pin. Since LED current drives are controlled and programmable, resistors that limit current flow are not necessary. A single supply as little as 3V or as high as 25V can power the entire display system. The IC has a precise ten-step voltage divider and an adjustable voltage reference. Signals are accepted by the high-impedance input buffer up to 1.5V from the positive supply and down to the ground. Additionally, it does not require protection from inputs below 35V. Ten separate comparators that are connected to the precision divider are driven by the input buffer. Usually, accuracy is greater than 1 dB. Signals with a broad dynamic range, such as audio level, power, light intensity, or vibration, are well suited for the LM3915's 3 dB/step display. Audio applications include power meters, RF signal strength meters, average or peak level indicators, and more.
