The CD4021 is an 8-stage static shift register IC housed in a DIP-16 package, designed for use in data storage and transfer applications in digital circuits. This IC consists of eight D-type flip-flops connected in series, allowing for the serial-in/parallel-out (SIPO) or parallel-in/serial-out (PISO) configurations. Such versatility makes it suitable for applications requiring data buffering, signal conversion, and serial data communication. Each of the eight stages in the CD4021 can store a single bit of data. The IC features a data input, a clock input to control data shifting, and parallel load inputs that allow the simultaneous loading of data into all eight flip-flops. Data is shifted through the register on the rising edge of the clock pulse, enabling the serial transfer of information while maintaining data integrity. The outputs include both serial (Q7) and parallel outputs (Q1–Q8), facilitating multiple data access options.
